Poland is preparing
to institute regulations for the licensing and taxation of online
gambling.
According to The
Warsaw Voice, the regulations will be similar to those in Italy,
which recently opened national markets to a massive expansion of
betting and a big boost to the public treasury.
Polish law
currently prohibits gambling on Web sites outside the country,
although the number of sites doing business with Polish citizens has
continued to rise.
The Voice
speculated that a combination of factors — the high cost of building
and operating land-based casinos, statutory restrictions on
advertising of casinos, mounting hostility to protectionism in the
EU and the impact of last year’s online ban in the United States —
have led policymakers to reconsider their stance.
The new laws are
expected to be implemented in full by September.
