Penny-denomination slot machines have
proven very popular among gamblers in recent years—so much so that
some in the industry have speculated that casino properties might
soon experiment with half-cent denominations. It hasn’t taken long
for that speculation to become reality.
The Mohegan Sun Resort & Casino in
Uncasville, Conn. announced March 19 that it had installed 20
half-cent gaming machines on its Casino of the Earth and Casino of
the Sky gaming floors. And there are plans to install an additional
15 to 20 machines in the next two to three weeks. Mohegan officials
claim their property is currently the only destination in the United
States to offer the half-cent slots.
“This latest offering, which allows
customers to wager half a cent instead of the traditional quarter,
dollar or even penny, is just another way Mohegan Sun is
revolutionizing the gaming industry,” the Mohegan Tribe said in a
press release.
In another recent slot floor
development, Mohegan Sun said that as of May 1, all of its 6,200
current slot machines will be equipped with the state-of-the-art
ticket-in/ticket-out systems, creating a completely coin-free gaming
environment.
The property, already one of the
largest casinos in the world, is currently undertaking a massive,
$740 million expansion—Project Horizon. That project features a new
1,000-room hotel with a unique House of Blues experience, 115,000
square feet of new retail and restaurant space and the new
64,000-square-foot Casino of the Wind. After its scheduled 2010
completion, the tribe said Mohegan Sun will be home to more than
7,600 slot machines.
